Manuel Riveros Medal

About the Award

Manuel Riveros Medal award was established by the Brazilian Society of Mass Spectrometry (BrMASS) at the beginning of its creation with the aim of honoring great names in mass spectrometry in Brazil.

About Manuel Riveros

Manuel Riveros is one of the great pioneers in Brazil and an international reference in mass spectrometry, as well as a world-renowned researcher, enthusiast and active collaborator of the Brazilian Society of Mass Spectrometry, serving as our president for several terms, and senior professor at the Universidade de São Paulo (USP).

His research group aims to elucidate the basic molecular aspects related to the intrinsic reactivity of chemical substances. The phenomenological description of intrinsic reactivity is obtained from studying very low pressure gas-phase ion-molecule reactions that bear formal resemblance to common chemical reactions in condensed phases. The energetics and mechanisms of these reactions carried out under solvent-free conditions are characterized by a combination of theoretical and experimental techniques that include ab initio calculations of reaction pathways, of likely structures for ionic species and for intermediates of gas-phase ion-molecule reactions. The research group is particularly interested in studying the phenomena associated with ion solvation by characterizing the progressive association of an ion with increasing number of solvent molecules through a “ground up” approach.
